Drug offences include;

• Possession of a controlled drug
• Possession with intent to supply a controlled drug
• Production of a controlled drug

In addition, the majority of offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act are deemed “lifestyle” offences for the purposes of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and confiscation proceedings in the event of conviction are inevitable.

Many of the drug offences that our Criminal Defence Lawyers defend are contained in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Controlled drugs are classified as Class A, B or C, all of which are defined within the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This classification is largely based on the degree of harm likely to be involved by their use.

The classification and quantity of drugs involved with any case will determine a jail sentence when applicable. Class A drugs being the most serious:

• Class A – include cocaine, heroin and ecstasy;
• Class B – include amphetamines, cannabis and barbiturates and
• Class C – include anabolic steroids, diazepam and others
